Mastering your Autumn skincare routine – The secret to keeping your skin healthy all year around

You know autumn has truly arrived when the nights begin to draw in, the leaves start to fall from the trees and you have to pull out your favourite jumpers from the back of the wardrobe. It’s true, some of us fully embrace the need to layer-up and get cosy, but the drier, cooler seasonal change can take a toll on your skin, especially if you’re not prepared.
Let’s face it – as the temperature drops we start to forget to keep hydrated (drinking pumpkin-spiced lattes instead of water doesn’t count!) and may start to neglect our skin as we begin the long season of over-indulgence. Autumn is a time to stay hydrated and keep our skin moisturised and prepped for the coming winter months.

We’ve put together a few tips on how to keep your skin looking its best during the autumn transition.

Prepping for the season

Exfoliating your skin is a great way to remove the build-up of dead skin cells, giving your skin a fresh look and smooth feel ready for those heavier moisturisers to work their magic. Whilst shying away from scrubbing your skin in the summer can help reduce sun damage, gentle exfoliation on a regular basis throughout the autumn can actually help combat dry skin, allowing your other products to sink in and keep your skin nice and hydrated.

Repair the damage

After a long summer of sun exposure, your skin may be damaged in ways you just can’t see. Incorporating nourishing, repairing skincare products and ingredients into your routine can help to reverse some of that damage. Look for products that contain high levels of antioxidants and vital nutrients sourced from natural ingredients, such as the small but powerful Australian Kakadu Plum, containing high levels of Vitamin C and found in all of KIATA’s range. Vitamin C not only boosts collagen and fades dark spots, it’s a nutrient antioxidant which protects your skin against damage caused by those nasty free radicals.

Hydration, hydration, hydration!

Did we mention hydration? Autumn is the perfect time to invest in richer, thicker moisturising creams and serums to help your skin combat the cooler, drier climates. Just as summer was the time for lightweight creams, high SPF and oil-control, autumn is the time for hydrating serums, nourishing moisturisers and repairing formulas to get your skin ready for the cold chill of winter – it’s coming!
Using a nourishing cream in the morning like our Secret Infusion Day Cream will help to keep your skin hydrated throughout the day, and its more lightweight formula means you can still layer up your SPF and make-up (yes, SPF should still be used in the autumn!) Swapping your gel cleanser or facial wash for a cream-based cleanser can also aid your hydration woes, like KIATA’s Deluxe Radiance Cream Cleanser which can be used morning and evening to gently wash away make-up and impurities. Combined with a weekly moisture-boosting mask treatment or serum, your skin will retain its plumped, hydrated glow even if it’s below zero outside!
Remember, your hands need looking after too! The cold can wreak havoc with your hands, drying out the skin and adding more lines to your next palm reading session. Regular use of a rich hand cream such as our Youth Restoring Hand Cream will not only moisturise and hydrate the skin throughout the day, but also fight the signs of ageing using exclusive organic oils.

Nourish from the inside out

Ever woken up to a huge break-out after a party? Well, times of over-indulgence can wear out your body, leaving it tired and toxified, which can be reflected in your skin. Unwanted breakouts, dry patches and dark circles around the eyes are all signs of a bit too much of the good stuff. We know, it’s hard when there’s so many treats to try at this time of year! However, having the occasional detox can help to make you feel revitalised and refreshed – and your skin will thank you for it. Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water (if you want to stay warm, try herbal or decaffeinated teas), eat a good variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables (hearty soup for the soul) and try to get at least 30 minutes of gentle exercise each day (try getting a breath of fresh air and walking off those extra calories!) Treating your body the right way will help your skin in the long run.

So, whether you’re a lover of the cold or missing the summer warmth, remember to treat your skin for the right season to retain that envious glow all year round.
